MVG favourite for Germany title

michael-van-gerwenMichael van Gerwen is now the clear 5/2 favourite to take this weekend’s European Darts Trophy title after the withdrawal of Phil Taylor.

‘Mighty Mike’ claimed the World Championship title at the start of the year before going on to thrash Taylor 7-0 in the Premier League, and it seemed as though the Stoke legend’s powers were on the wane.

However ‘The Power’ thrashed the 25-year-old Dutchman 18-9 in the World Matchplay final a few months ago before taking two more titles in Australia at the end of August.

The veteran looks back to his best but he and Gary Anderson will not be lining up in Leipzig over the weekend for the final European Tour event of the year.

There are still plenty of big names on show, with the up-and-down Adrian Lewis set for a run-out, while Simon Whitlock will hope to keep his good form going at the Kohlrabizirkus.

Regular Premier League stars James Wade, Dave Chisnall, Peter Wright and Robert Thornton have all made the trip for what looks set to be a competitive event in Germany.

As the winter approaches, the top players will already be turning their attentions towards the World Championship once again, with Taylor out to reclaim his title and win the sport’s top event for a 17th time (Taylor 7/4 fav Outright Betting).

But he knows that he will have to be right at the top of his game, with Van Gerwen (9/4) showing no sign of falling away any time soon.
