MVG confident of O2 glory

Michael van Gerwen is convinced that he will successfully defend his Premier League Darts title at the O2 Arena on May 22 (Van Gerwen 5/4 – To Lift The Trophy).

The 25-year-old currently sits at the top of the standings, with 22 points from 15 games played, and has already qualified for the semi-finals.

And the Dutchman will finish top of the league table for the second year running if he manages to beat or draw with Peter Wright in the last round of matches in Brighton on Thursday night (Van Gerwen 1/2, Wright 7/2, draw 9/2 – Match Prices).

He is ranked number one in the world at present and is the reigning world champion and, after beating compatriot Raymond van Barneveld 7-4 last time out in Newcastle, appears confident of going all the way again this year.

“I’m going to finish top of the table and I want to win this tournament – simple,” he said. “I know I feel good and I know I can win this again.”

MVG and Barney have already secured their places in London and it is now between Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Wright for the two remaining spots.

Wright needs to beat ‘Mighty Mike’ to stand any chance of getting beyond the group stage and it had been suggested that the defending champion would take it easy on his opponent to try and help eliminate 16-time world champion Taylor.

But, with history between Van Gerwen and Wright, the talented youngster has made it clear the thought never even entered his mind.

“I’m never going to let him win. Never, ever,” he added. “Everyone knows that, because I’m a winner, and I want to win every game, no matter if I keep Phil in the tournament.”
