More to come from MVG

Michael van Gerwen feels he will have to up his game when he takes on Gary Anderson in round three of the World Darts Championship (Van Gerwen 1/5, Anderson 100/30 – Match Prices).

‘Mighty Mike’ secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over Kevin McDine on Sunday night to progress to the last 16 at Alexandra Palace.

The Dutchman hit 11 180s and averaged 96.88 to see off the challenge of the Englishman and, following Phil Taylor’s exit, is now the 13/8 favourite to lift the trophy on New Year’s Day.

But his next opponent could be one of the trickiest he has to face in the event, as Scotland’s Anderson looked in good nick when beating Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan 4-1 in round two.

The jovial 43-year-old averaged 97.97 and will be full of confidence when he takes on the man in green on December 28.

The match-up could be one of the games of the tournament to date, with both men fast players and capable of decimating the treble 20.

But MVG will take nothing for granted and will look to lift his performance up a notch or two when he toes the oche with the ‘Flying Scotsman’.

“I did quite well, I’m happy with my performance, I can do better but I’ll keep that for the next round,” he said.

“Last game I didn’t play well at all, I’m playing better and I hope I play better next game, and I will need to because I’m playing Gary Anderson.”
