Chizzy prepared for repeat performance

Dave ChisnallDave Chisnall insists he will be far more prepared than 12 months ago if he can reach the final of this year’s World Grand Prix (Chisnall 28/1 Outright Betting).

‘Chizzy’ stormed through to the final in Dublin 12 months ago only to come up against the juggernaut that is Phil Taylor, with ‘The Power’ sweeping him aside with a 6-0 whitewash in the final.

It was a chastening experience for Chisnall, who had high hopes of claiming his first major PDC title at the Citwest Hotel but failed to hit the heights when it mattered most.

A few pundits feared that the thrashing might ruin the 34-year-old’s career in the long term but he feels that it has actually had the opposite effect.

“People said it would be a long time before I recovered, but I played better – I got into the Premier League,” he told ESPN. “Now I’m more comfortable playing on the big stages, the walk-ons and everything that comes with it.”

The St Helens-born ace will kick off this year’s campaign with a tough challenge as he faces Dutch legend Raymond van Barneveld on Tuesday evening (Chisnall Evens, Van Barneveld 4/5 Match Betting).

But, if he can get past the five-time world champion and replicate last year’s showing, Chisnall believes he will be ready.

“It gave me great experience,” he added. “I know I can do the same this year and, if I get to the final, I’ll know exactly how to approach it.”

Taylor remains the 2/1 favourite to take the title with Netherlands ace Michael van Gerwen (11/4) just behind him in the market.
