Froome glad to be back

Chris FroomeChris Froome (2/1 second favourite Vuelta a Espana outright) believes riding the upcoming Vuelta a Espana will give him the perfect opportunity to try and recover from the disappointment of his Tour de France campaign.

Heading into the Grande Boucle as the defending champion, Froome was the huge favourite to retain his title but after a nervous opening few days in Britain, he crashed out on the fifth stage.

It was not the first time he had come off in the race and subsequent scans showed that he had suffered fractures to both his left wrist and right hand.

However, after spending time resting at home, he has recently been back in training and was confirmed on Monday as Team Sky’s leader for the final Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta a Espana.

The Vuelta was the race Froome shot to prominence in, finishing second ahead of Bradley Wiggins in 2011 and it is likely to be yet another intriguing three weeks in Spain.

With the event getting underway with a team time-trial on Saturday, Giro d’Italia champion Nairo Quintana (10/11 favourite Vuelta a Espana outright) currently leads the betting ahead of the British rider for the overall, while home favourites Joaquim Rodriguez, Alberto Contador and Alejandro Valverde are also likely to be up there.

Following his disappointment at the Tour, the 29-year-old admits he is now excited about the chance to start racing again and says he will give all he can to try and win the Red Jersey.

“This is exactly the sort of challenge I need after the disappointment of withdrawing from the Tour de France,” he told team Sky’s official website. “I’ve always really enjoyed racing at the Vuelta. It’s a tough race but a great opportunity for the whole team.

“I know that the level of competition will be incredibly high this year, but we’ve got a strong line-up so we hope to be as competitive as possible. Going for the win will certainly be tough, but we’ll give it everything we’ve got.”
