Contador unsure of Tour performance

Contador 300x194 Contador unsure of Tour performanceDefending Tour de France champion Alberto Contador (4/6 Outright) claims his form is still “unknown” heading into the 2011 race.

The Spaniard will ride for Saxo Bank-SunGard in controversial circumstances, as he still has a doping hearing from a positive test in last year’s Tour hanging over his head.

On the road, Contador won the recent Giro D’Italia and then followed that up with a second-placed finish in the road race of the Spanish national championships at the weekend.

He had complained of tiredness after the Giro win but had the opportunity to give his legs a work out as the riders had to endure the ascent of the Alto del Desierto de Las Palmas.

Contador lost out to Jose Joaquin Rojas in a sprint finish to secure the silver medal, coming on the back of a bronze he won in Friday’s time trial event, and now he plans to rest before the Tour de France gets underway on July 2.

“We’ll have to wait and see what my performance and physical state will be at the Tour, we still don’t know,” said he defending champion.

“I have to wait, it is still unknown. Especially since the Giro I have just rested and again until the start of the Tour I’ll do the same.”

If Contador allows himself to get distracted by the impending doping trial then his closest rival Andy Schleck (15/8 Outright) could take the yellow jersey away from him after narrowly missing out to the Spaniard 12 months ago.
