Brailsford confident after stage two

Sir Dave BrailsfordTeam Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford believes his team are in an “ideal” situation despite Vincenzo Nibali (7/1 to win the Tour de France) claiming the yellow jersey after stage two of the Tour de France.

Nibali now leads the overall race by two seconds after powering to victory in Sheffield, with Team Sky’s Chris Froome (5/6 to win the Tour) and Alberto Contador (7/4) unable to catch him.

While Froome finished just behind Nibali in 18th place, he managed to keep up with the pace as the race took part on many narrow roads.

Despite losing the second stage, Brailsford has now admitted that he is pleased with the results after two days of racing, while the Team Sky mastermind was also thrilled to see Froome just avoid an accident.

He told Sky Sports: “It was a difficult day, challenging day with narrow roads and with so many people out there. You have got to focus and concentrate all day.

“I think they [the general classification contenders] were all concerned about not losing any time, but they were also hesitant because nobody wanted the jersey.

“So Nibali has got two seconds, but he will have to defend that now, which is pretty good for everybody else. It is ideal for us.”

While one big accident grabbed the headlines, Team Sky rider Geraint Thomas has tried to warn fans to not put the riders at risk by going too close to the roads.

He said: “For sure, it was a bit dodgy at times. The worst thing is when people have got their back to the peloton taking selfies. There were a few. They don’t see us coming. They don’t realise we use every part of the road. There are a lot of us and we use every inch.

“If you are on the front [of the peloton] you can see them but if you’re two back you nearly hit them. There is not much racing on British roads and people don’t understand how fast we’re going and how close we get.”
