Volts aim to power past Royals

Otago Volts coach Vaughn Johnson wants his men to keep defying the odds and qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 (Otago 4/1 Tournament Outright).

The Kiwi outfit had to come through qualifying to reach the main event and three straight wins ensured their participation in the group stage.

And now, having won two of their three group games, they have a chance to reach the semi-finals, with victory over the in-form Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday set to confirm their place in the last four (Royals 4/6, Volts 6/5 Match Prices).

But they face a stiff task, as they will be playing one of the tournament favourites, who have won all of their Group A games to date and know that victory over the Volts will ensure they top the group and face an easier semi-final.

Defeat for the New Zealanders would not necessarily mean the end of the line, but Johnson wants his hard-working squad to keep punching above their weight and take out the Royals.

“When we came into the Champions League Twenty20, our first challenge was to qualify and we did that,” he said. “And then it was to win a game in the main event, and we have won two now.

“We’re just happy to continue the winning run we have had.”

Otago have shown an incredible will to win in the event to date and beat Highveld Lions last time out on the match ‘boundary count’ after the scores in the game were level and a Super Over failed to separate the sides.

And Johnson admitted it would be “huge” for the team to reach the semi-finals after all the hard work they have put in.
