England’s batsmen limped to 104-6 at the close on day one of the Third test after their bowlers had ripped through Pakistan to dismiss them for just 99 (Pakistan 6/4, draw 33/1, England 4/7 – Match In-Play).
Pakistan held a unassailable 2-0 lead going into the final test in Dubai and must have been confident off heaping further misery on England once Misbah Ul-Haq had won the toss and elected to put his side in on a flat batting track.
However, England’s pace duo of Stuart Broad (4-36) and James Anderson (3-35) tore through the Pakistan upper order to leave them reeling at 53-7 at lunch.
Monty Panesar (2-25) and Graeme Swann (1-0) also joined in the fun as just 46 runs were added for Pakistan’s remaining three wickets in the afternoon session.
But England’s batsmen once again undid much of their bowlers’ good work, Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott falling early to leave Andrew Strauss’ men 19-2 at tea.
Strauss and Kevin Pietersen put on 57 for the third wicket to rebuild the innings, but Pietersen’s woes against left-arm spinners continued when he was dismissed lbw off the bowling of Abdur Rehman for 32.
That signalled another collapse in a calamitous final session where Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan and Matt Prior were all dismissed with the addition of just 21 runs (England Total Runs 1st Innings - Under 175 – 5/6 Match In-Play).
Strauss ended the day on 41 with nightwatchmen Anderson at the other end on four, carrying a slender lead of just five into day two.
