Cook eager to build on landmark win

Alastair CookCaptain Alastair Cook hopes England have turned a corner and can build upon their first Test victory in 11 matches after levelling the series with India (England 6/5, India 9/4, draw 9/4 – Series Betting).

Cook and co came into the third Test of the five-match series under immense pressure after falling to a surprise defeat in their previous outing at Lord’s.

However, England responded well by dominating all five days of their latest contest with India in Hampshire, securing a 226-run triumph.

Moeen Ali finished with career-best figures of 6-47 as he took the last four wickets of the Indian innings, while James Anderson claimed two scalps inside the first five overs of the morning session.

India were eventually all out for 178, well short of their target of 445, as England ended a year-long wait for a Test win.

Cook, whose captaincy has been called into question in light of recent results and his form with the bat, says he hopes this is the start of a new beginning for the England side.

While the Essex opener is not getting carried away with one win he hopes to see further improvement from his side in the fourth Test with India at Old Trafford next week (England 11/8, India 3/1, draw 6/4 – fourth Test Betting).

“It’s been a really good week, I had a good feeling coming into it but we almost played the perfect game. It does not mean we have cracked it but it was pretty good,” Cook told the BBC.

While Cook was full of praise for his team, he also acknowledged how important it was for him to score runs in this Test and beyond after knocks of 95 and 70 (not out) respectively in England’s win.

“It was getting to a crux situation, if it had carried on like that who knows what would have happened? But from one to 11 everyone contributed,” he added.

“One game does not change everything, and we know how important my runs are from the top of the order. I don’t know if my captaincy got dragged into it but when you are losing there will be focus on it.”
