Root wants India win

Joe RootJoe Root feels it is vital that England do not rest on their laurels and go all out for victory in the fifth and final Test with India (England 6/5, India 9/2, draw 5/4 – Match Prices).

Things looked bleak for the home side after their woeful defeat to MS Dhoni’s men at Lord’s and it seemed inevitable that under-fire and out-of-form skipper Alastair Cook would be replaced as captain.

But the Essex man refused to quit and has now led his men to consecutive victories over the Asian giants – at Southampton and Old Trafford-to leave them leading the series 2-1 and closing in on yet another home triumph over the Indians.

The two sides will now square off at the Oval on Friday, with the tourists needing to win to take a share of the series, while a draw would be enough for Cook to lift the trophy.

And Root admits that the spirit in the camp is high after the way they have turned things round in the face of stinging criticism.

“You come out of two games where we’ve played some really strong cricket and there’s a lot of confidence,” he told Sky Sports.

“A lot of guys are putting in some really strong performances and as a side we’ve pulled really tight.”

England are still in a rebuilding phase, with a number of young players finding their feet in Test cricket, and a series success over India would be a massive shot in the arm for all concerned.

And, with that in mind, the Yorkshireman has urged his team-mates to dig deep and make sure they finish the job off in south London.

“We can’t rest on just two Test wins, we have to capitalise on what we’ve started and really cement what we have done to take this series home,” he added.

Root is 4/1 to end the series as Top England Batsman.
