Pakistan seeking new inspiration

Misbah-ul-Haq 4194252Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq feels his side need an inspirational innings from somebody to lift their confidence and get them back into the one-day series with Australia (Pakistan 7/1, Australia 1/7 – Series Winner).

The Asians have slipped 1-0 behind in the three-match series after the Aussies pulled off a 93-run success in Tuesday’s first one-dayer in Sharjah.

Having amassed 255-8 from their 50 overs, the men from Down Under then dismissed the ‘hosts’ for just 162 in only 36.3 overs.

It was another abject batting display by Pakistan, which followed on from an equally poor showing in Sunday’s Twenty20 loss to the same opposition.

With Shahid Afridi at the helm, they could only manage 96 runs from their 20 overs and were powerless to stop the Australians cruising to their victory target with more than six overs to spare.

Batting collapses and poor shot selection have become the hallmark of Pakistan batsmen in recent years, and they are generally an easy side to beat for the top nations, with wickets gifted to bowlers at will.

Misbah is aware of the situation but feels it might take just one memorable knock to give the rest of his batsmen a much-needed shot in the arm.

“I think sometimes you just lose confidence, and at the moment that’s what is happening with our team,” he said. “We need one or two good innings to just get back on track.

“We’re looking forward and thinking positive that somebody just comes and stands up and plays a really good innings, just to get back on track.”

The two sides will square off in the second ODI on Friday, with Misbah’s men needing to win to keep the series alive (Pakistan 2/1, Australia 4/11 – Match Prices).
