Anderson singles out Morgan

James AndersonBowler Jimmy Anderson says Eoin Morgan can be a “huge player” for England in both the upcoming one-day series in Sri Lanka and the World Cup that follows next year (England – 8/1 World Cup 2015 Outright).

England will head to Sri Lanka for a seven-match ODI series in November and December as they continue to prepare for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand early in the New Year.

They have struggled in 2014 with the 50-over format, losing home series’ against both Sri Lanka and India, and will have to improve considerably if they are to trouble the big guns again next year.

Pressure has been heaped on captain Alastair Cook but he is expected to be retained as one-day skipper when the squad for Sri Lanka is announced on Wednesday.

Anderson will also be included and he has identified big-hitter Morgan as a key player.

“He’s going to be a huge player for us in the one day series in Sri Lanka and on to the World Cup,” he said.

“He’s one of the most talented players I’ve played with and he’s one of those match winners you need, especially in a big competition like the World Cup and we’re hoping for him to do well.”

England will only play one-day cricket between now and their first World Cup match against co-hosts Australia on February 14 and Anderson says it is important that is the sole focus over the winter.

He added on Sky Sports: “The advantage we’ve got over the next few months is we can concentrate solely on one day cricket.

“We’ve no Test cricket now until March so we can go to Sri Lanka in a couple of months’ time and really focus on improving as a one-day side and go over to Australia for that Tri-Series just before the World Cup and make sure our skills are in order for doing well in the World Cup.”

Unsurprisingly, Australia are the 11/4 favourites to win the World Cup, ahead of South Africa (9/2), India (5/1), Sri Lanka (7/1), while New Zealand and Pakistan join England on 8/1.
