Moores backs captain Cook

Cook and Moores 20396778England (8/1 – Outright Winner) coach Peter Moores is adamant Alastair Cook is the right man to lead the Three Lions into the World Cup next year and has backed the skipper to prove him right.

Cook has come under huge pressure after the disappointing performance in the five-match ODI series against India where they lost 3-1.

Some woeful batting, wayward bowling and questionable tactical decisions from Cook have all been put under the spotlight, with many calling for a change in leader.

Former England internationals Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann have all given their thoughts on the situation and all three believe the team would be better without Cook.

The opener has shown great grit and determination amidst all the criticism though, and a victory in the final match of the recent series against India has provided some respite.

A convincing victory showed exactly what England can do when they are on their game, although it is the ability to string together results that has always been a problem.

The Three Lions are set for a winter tour of Sri Lanka in preparation for the World Cup next year and the person in charge then is likely to be captain for the coveted tournament in 2015.

Despite many calling for a chance at the helm, Moores has backed Cook to stay in charge and believes the skipper has the right credentials.

“Everybody is pretty clear, I’ve got a huge amount of respect for Alastair as a player and as a captain. The questioning of him as a cricketer, I think, has been unjust,” he said.

“You can hear pretty clearly how I feel about Alastair Cook but I would be wrong to start saying, ‘the England captain is this and this is our side’ because I am one of four selectors.”

Australia are the current favourites at 11/4 to win the tournament next year, with defending champions India third favourites at 5/1.
