Malinga and Tharanga return

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga and opening batsman Upul Tharanga have both been recalled to the Sri Lanka squad for the first three one-day internationals of the five-match series against Australia (Sri Lanka 4/7, Australia 5/4 Series Winner).

Malinga is available again after a back problem ruled him out of the two Twenty20 internationals, although he looks set to be rested for the first match of the ODI series – at Pallakele Stadium on Wednesday (Sri Lanka 4/5, Australia Evens Match Betting).

Chairman of cricket selectors Duleep Mendis said: “We have been advised by the team physio to rest Malinga for the first ODI. We will consider him for the remaining matches.”

Tharanga (9/2 Top Sri Lanka Batsman) makes his return following a three-month suspension for using a banned substance at the World Cup and looks set to resume his partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan (10/3) at the top of the order, allowing Mahela Jayawardene (3/1) to drop back into the middle order.

Dhammika Prasad and Dilruwan Perera, who were both in the Twenty20 squad, have been left out while Thilina Kandamby is also missing, despite being the vice-captain on the recent tour of England.
