Lumb absence no problem for Notts

Cricket - Natwest T20 Blast - Nottinghamshire Outlaws v Birmingham Bears - Trent BridgeNottinghamshire coach Mick Newell is confident his side will be able to cope even if Michael Lumb is not fit to face Leicestershire in Thursday’s NatWest T20 Blast encounter (Leicestershire 7/4, Notts 4/9 – Match Prices).

The two sides are set to meet at Grace Road in a match that neither can afford to lose if they are to challenge for a place in the play-offs.

The Outlaws have won just two of their five 20-over games this term and sit in seventh spot in the standings, while the Foxes are one place and two points below, having won just a solitary game all campaign (Notts 10/1 – Outright Winner).

The top four from each group will make the play-offs and both Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire have played two games less than the Worcestershire and Lancashire, who currently occupy the top two spots in the table.

But they will need to start winning soon or run the risk of being cut adrift from the business end of proceedings.

England T20 star Lumb is a key player for the Outlaws but has picked up an arm injury and is rated as doubtful for the clash.

But Newell is confident that experienced Australia batsmen Phil Jaques could come into the side and do a more than adequate job.

“We’ll wait and see how Michael Lumb feels on Thursday but we’ve added Phil Jaques to the squad and he may feature,” he said.

“He’s been in good form for us this season and we’ve already extended his deal until the first week of July.”
