Klinger eyes strong finish

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger feels his side need to secure three more wins in the YB40 group stage to reach the semi-finals of the competition (Gloucestershire 12/1 Tournament Outright).

The south-west outfit are currently third in Group C, with 11 points from eight games played, having won five of their 40-over games to date.

They take on Leicestershire on Tuesday who are just one place and one point behind in the race to top the standings (Gloucestershire 4/6, Leicestershire 6/5 Match Prices).

The Gladiators are looking to bounce back after losing heavily to Somerset on Sunday despite a magnificent unbeaten 131 by Klinger, while the Foxes will be on a high after their last-gasp, three-wicket success over Yorkshire.

With only the group winners guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals every point is vital, as the second best team from across all three groups will make up the fourth side in the last four.

But Aussie batsman Klinger is aiming high and has made it clear that he does not want to take the chance of finishing second in the group and is keen for his men to return to winning ways over the next couple of weeks.

“Top spot is still very much up for grabs,” he said “We have Somerset in the last game of the competition, so the next three games before that are very important for us.

“We have a game in hand on Somerset, so we probably have to win three of our last four games to make it – and that’s obviously what we are going to try to do.”
