Jones out to slay Panthers

Simon Jones hopes Glamorgan can keep up the momentum gained from Monday’s YB40 victory over Somerset when they face Middlesex on Wednesday (Glamorgan & Middx 10/11 Match Prices).

The two sides are set to go head-to-head in Cardiff with little between them in the Group C standings and every match is now vital as the clubs try to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

The Dragons are currently third in the table and on the same number of points as fourth-place Middlesex but they have played a game less that the Panthers and two less than table-topping Somerset.

The winners of the three groups plus the best-placed runner-up will reach the knock-out stage of the event and so the Welsh county have their fate very much in their own hands and can top the group by winning their remaining four games.

They took care of the south-west side last time out with Mark Wallace making 70 and Jones hitting the winning runs as they sneaked home with one wicket and three balls to spare (Wallace 4/1 Top Glamorgan Batsman).

And the Ashes-winning former England paceman believes that the belief gained from beating one of the best one-day sides in the country will stand them in good stead as they try to repeat the dose against the Londoners.

“We have beaten the top of the league boys and they are a very good side,” he said. “It shows the ability we have in our squad.

“This is why we play the game. It’s tough and if you want to get in the top two, we have to beat the other teams.

“Middlesex are a very good side but we have momentum now from the Somerset win.”
