Hall a doubt for Northants

Northamptonshire will check on the fitness of club captain Andrew Hall ahead of this afternoon’s CB40 clash with Derbyshire at the County Ground (Northamptonshire 10/11, Derbyshire 10/11).

Hall has been struggling with a calf problem in recent weeks, although coaching personnel had hoped he’d be available to play a cameo role for the club’s Second XI on Thursday.

Unfortunately, Hall was unable to take part and remains rated at 50/50 to play in today’s match against Derbyshire and could also miss Saturday’s Championship fixture against Glamorgan.

Head coach David Ripley has other options at his disposal, but he admits that the absence of Hall would be sorely felt by his side in any competitive fixture.

“Unfortunately the recovery hasn’t gone that well. The issue is pressure from a back problem which is causing him trouble in his calf. It’s very frustrating for Andrew because he had been looking forward to getting some cricket,” said Ripley.

“We’ve got a bit of a gap again after these five days of cricket coming up. It means we’ve got a decision to make on whether we look to play him in the hope there is time to recover after the Championship game or we just give him a good block of rest.”

A highlight of Northamptonshire’s 2011 season was a semi-final appearance in last season’s Friends Life T20 competition, though their interests in the 2012 tournament have been ended prematurely (Sussex 7/2 Favourites Outright Winner Friends Life T20).
