Stuart Broad and Monty Panesar impressed with bat and ball respectively to edge England ahead in the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi (England 2/5 – Match In-Play).
The tourists are looking to square the series after suffering a heavy ten-wicket defeat in the opening Test in Dubai and they have a great chance.
Broad made sure England’s tail wagged with an unbeaten knock of 58 to build on good work from Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott as they chiselled out a 70-run lead.
Panesar then had Pakistan on the ropes with three wickets, by accounting for Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, while Graeme Swann chipped in with the scalp of left-hander Taufeeq Umar.
However. Pakistan recovered from their slump to 54-4, with Azhar Ali (46no) and Asad Shafiq (35no) steadying the ship to give their side a lead of 55 runs at stumps on day three (Pakistan 5/2 – Match In-Play).
Afterwards, Broad reflected on an important morning session for England and told Sky Sports: “It looked quite hard to survive out there but if you played your shots you put the pressure back on the bowler and that was my aim. Once we got some momentum going the wicket looked flatter.
“I’m a natural striker of the ball and that’s how I play my cricket. I’d like to build and get big scores but that’s something for the future.”
