Pollard happy to deal with pressure

Kieron PollardKieron Pollard is determined to rise to the challenge of captaining the Mumbai Indians as they begin their Champions League T20 campaign against Lahore on Saturday (Mumbai 2/5, Lahore 15/8 – Match Prices).

The West Indies all-rounder was thrown the captain’s armband at the 11th hour after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the competition with a fractured finger earlier this week.

He will have little time to adjust to his new role as Mumbai are involved in the four-team qualifying tournament ahead of the main event, and will lead his men into battle against the Pakistan side this weekend.

Further games against Sri Lankan outfit Southern Express and New Zealand’s Northern Districts will follow, with the top two in the table then advancing to the group stage.

Pollard has now become something of a T20 expert, with the ability to hit the ball to all parts of the ground and a knack of taking wickets at crucial times, and he will be able to call upon the likes of Lasith Malinga, Michael Hussey and Lendl Simmons during the sub-continental extravaganza.

Mumbai are 7/1 fourth favourites to win the whole event and will need to get through qualification first, but Pollard remains confident that he and his team-mates will play to the best of their ability and put up a decent challenge.

“I am aware of the great expectations ahead of us,” he said. “However, I am confident that together, we will face the challenges, and work towards retaining the glory and the stature of the Mumbai Indians team.”
