Adams lauds Ponting capture

Surrey team director Chris Adams says Ricky Ponting is “one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era” after the former Australia skipper agreed a two-month contract (Surrey 8/1 – CB40 League outright).

The 38-year-old will act as cover for captain Graeme Smith throughout June and July, with Smith expected to be playing for South Africa in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Ponting retired from playing for Australia last December after scoring more than 27,000 runs over a glittering 17-year international career.

He was captain of Australia in the last two Ashes series in England, in 2005 and 2009, and will be in the country when the current Australia team arrive for their latest encounter with the old enemy.

Ponting has continued to represent his native Tasmania in Australia’s domestic Sheffield Shield and Big Bash Leagues and is due to play for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL in April (Mumbai Indians 9/2 – IPL 2013 outright).

Adams is delighted with the capture of the experienced right-hander, saying: “We knew we would lose Graeme to the ICC Champions Trophy in June. That given, we focused on recruiting the best possible replacement and, in Ricky Ponting, we have signed one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era.”

Ponting added: “I’m really excited to be playing for Surrey this season. They are a forward-thinking and historic club – and play at one of the greatest grounds in the world.

“It hasn’t been the friendliest place for me but now it will be my home for two months this summer.

“I’d like to think I can contribute a significant amount to the club – on and off the field – and am looking forward to getting stuck in as soon as I arrive.”
