Roach plays down Salita threat

PA 7565354 Khan and Roach 300x196 Roach plays down Salita threatAmir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach believes his boxer is better in every way when compared to his opponent Dmitriy Salita (4/1 to upset Khan in the bout betting) whom Khan faces next week.

The light-welterweight champion squares off against the Ukraine-born challenger on Saturday in the first defence of the belt he won on points against Andreas Kotelnik back in July.

The British Olympic silver medallist (5/4 to win on points in the round betting) brought legendary trainer Roach on board after his shock defeat to Breidis Prescott in 2008 and has since gone to win every fight thereafter.

Roach believes they will add another win to Khan’s record on Saturday, despite Salita being undefeated in his 31 fights.

“He’s a good solid boxer, but everything he does good, we do better,” said Roach.

“We have a faster jab; his right-hand counter is good, but he doesn’t have the knockout power

“He has a lot of fundamental habits we can take advantage of. He’s undefeated, he’s come a long way, but this is a huge step up right now – and it’s going to be too much for him.”

Roach has had the opportunity to see Salita up close in the run up to this fight, with the New York-based boxer having trained in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

Salita has also sparred with Floyd Mayweather Jnr in the past and claims he has been waiting 14 years for his opportunity to become a world champion.

Khan would do well not to be overly confident when he steps into the ring in Newcastle on Saturday, despite his trainers comments.
