Richard Schaefer flew to Las Vegas on Monday to open talks with counterpart Bob Arum about staging a potential super-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather (Mayweather 4/7, draw 28/1, Pacquiao 11/8 fight prices), it has emerged.
Schaefer revealed unbeaten American comeback king Mayweather had given him his “marching orders” to arrange what many big-fight followers feel would be one of the highest-grossing pay-per-view fights in modern times.
“Floyd and me want to see if we can get the fight done. The fact that I am flying to Las Vegas to meet with Bob shows you how serious our side is about making the fight, ” Schaefer told ESPN.
“Bob and I will approach this without egos and try to get it done under fair terms. Floyd gave me his marching orders and I will see today how it goes and report back.”
Mayweather (40-0) returned to the big stage after a self-imposed retirement recently to outpoint Juan Manuel Marquez, while Filipino superstar Pacquiao turned in a boxing masterclass to beat Miguel Cotto on November 14.
Possible venues for the early 2010 fight include Las Vegas and the new 105,000-capacity stadium of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.
