In order to succeed in the poker world it is important to stay one step ahead of your opposition, after all we make the vast majority of our money by capitalising on the mistake they make. One way to keep yourself in pole position is to continually learn new skills and strategies.
Doyle Brunson, the 10-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and all round poker legend, once said that although he has been playing at the highest level for over 50 years he still learns something new almost every single time he sits down at the felt in a poker tournament or cash game. Others, such as Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan have said that the minute a players stops learning is the exact same minute they also start to lose. These two superstars cannot be wrong, and they are not.
Online poker is a game that is very easy to become set in your ways because it is so easy to play a dozen or more tables at once and play a very robotic style. You may be winning at a nice hourly rate by logging pure volume but if players around you are constantly updating their skills by watching the best poker strategy videos and reading recommended poker strategy books they are going to eventually catch you up and finally overtake you because you will be too busy mass multi-tabling to notice.
That is not to say high volume players are unable to learn, that would be absurd, but the example was to show how easy it is to get lost in a little bubble and not worry about those around you. Make sure you are continuously learning new skills and the latest strategies and theories because others will be and you need to, at the very least, know how to combat them.
