Poker celebrities

With former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham doing great in the EPT Vilamoura Main Event I thought it would be a good time to look at another two British celebrities that have made a successful transition to the poker tables.

First up is another former footballer, Republic of Ireland front-man Tony Cascarino, who has live tournament winnings of $553,054 to date. After a shaky start in the live poker scene Cascarino has had a series of great results in the past couple of years. In 2007 he came 14th in EPT London Main Event for $44,883 and followed that up the following year by winning the Luton leg of the GUKPT series for a then career best of $96,205. Then in 2009 he had his best performance when he won the GUKPT Grand Final for a $283,412 payday. He is yet to cash in a tournament during 2010.

The second is a former soap star, Michael Greco, known to millions in the UK as Eastenders’ “Beppe.” Greco has had the most impressive results of the three poker celebrities here, having now amassed live tournament winnings of $1,027,038. He has gradually entered bigger and bigger tournaments over the last couple of years and has been a regular at the World Series of Poker since 2009, where he has has multiple cashes, most notably a third place in a $1,500 No-limit Hold’em event for $248,855 and another third place, this time at this year’s $2,500 Pot-limit Omaha event for an additional $129,691.
