Play For The Win

One area where many poker players fall down in tournaments is failing to go all out for the win. Of course when play begins they want to win but as the tournament progresses they start to think more about making it to the money than actually trying to go all out and win the entire tournament.

Although it is nice to make it to the money you will find that the majority of the money awarded in a typical online poker tournament is to the top three finishers, positions you really need to be aiming for. Min-cashes are all well and good but they will definitely see you through bad spells, you simply have to go deep when you make it into the money places.

The majority of tournament poker players tighten up too much around the bubble, the last few places before the money is awarded, as they attempt to scrape into the money but this is entirely the wrong strategy in a standard event. Unless you have a tiny stack that has absolutely no chance of winning then you should always make plays that are going to win you chips in the long run and give you the best chance of taking down the tournament.

Playing aggressively on the bubble is one way of doing this and whilst it is true that sometimes you will either be the unfortunate soul who bursts the bubble or losing a big coinflip to be left with a tiny stack that only just scrapes through into the money, the times you sail through the bubble with a huge stack then go on to reach the final table and win the who tournament will more than make up for it, in the long run.
